Black Girls Rock! Inc. is a non-profit mentoring organisation established to promote young women of colour, that began trending after their award ceremony was broadcast on television on Tuesday night. To show solidarity, black women in South Africa began posting pictures of themselves so social media with the hashtag which began to trend. The show was intended to highlight the accomplishments of exceptional women of colour who have made outstanding contributions in their careers and who stand as inspirational role models in their communities.


A lion was spotted in Braamfontein on Monday night, according to pictures on Twitter. The lion appeared on the streets at around 11pm, and caused the hashtag #BraamLion to trend for more than seven hours. Social media users posted some hilarious reactions to the incident. It is alleged that the lion was part of an advertisement that was being shot in the city.


Allister Coetzee was unveiled as the new Springbok coach by the South African Rugby Union on Tuesday, ending four months of speculation about who will succeed Heyneke Meyer. Coetzee will lead South Africa to the Rugby World Cup in Japan. Social media erupted with a flurry of positive enthusiasm over the announcement of the new #BokCoach.


Faith Nketsi‚ South Africa’s self-proclaimed ‘Queen of Twerk‚’ trended overnight after a graphic video showing a man’s genitals was posted to her Instagram account. In the clip, Queen Twerk is seen recording on her mobile phone while a man slaps her on the face with his private parts. The video‚ which has since been deleted from her Instagram account‚ has gone viral after followers copied it from Instagram and uploaded it to several social media sites. #QueenTwerk trended on social media for over 24 hours.
